Exercise and gain weight.

I knew it.

I have tried going to the gym.  Really.  I hate it but I have tried.  The theory was that I would exercise and therefore burn calories and lose weight.  Ha.  I usually gained weight.  Doesn’t make much sense, does it?

Do you know why I gained weight?  Because exercise makes me hungry!  Really hungry.  And I’m not the only one.

As described in Time magazine, researchers at Louisiana State University found that women who exercised more also ate more resulting in no weight loss benefit from exercise.

Here’s my favorite quote from the article:

“The most powerful determinant of your dietary intake is your energy expenditure,” says Steven Gortmaker, who heads Harvard’s Prevention Research Center on Nutrition and Physical Activity. “If you’re more physically active, you’re going to get hungry and eat more.”

Thank you for verifying what I already knew instinctively.

Researchers have also found that people participating in an exercise program naturally reduce their activity levels outside of the program to compensate.  This is also true in children.  Children who spend many hours in physical education classes and children with very few PE classes have the same total activity level because they self regulate during their out of school time.

Forget the jogging.  I’ll be on the couch reading.
