Why you should eat breakfast

This is how you should start your day.

One of the biggest and simplest nutritional strategies that I have all of my clients do is start the day by eating breakfast.  I’m constantly amazed at the number of clients that don’t eat breakfast.  Personally, I can’t start my day without eating a healthy breakfast every morning.  Breakfast should be absolute essential part of everybody’s daily routine.  Eating first thing in morning will help curb hunger spikes and help you lose weight.

How it works:

-  Your gylcogen stores (blood sugar) are depleted when you wake up in the morning.  By eating a healthy breakfast you’re able to refuel your gylcogen stores and provide your self with energy for the day.  This will allow you to exercise to your full potential and keep you mentally sharp.

- Keeping your gylcogen stores level reduces your body insulin response, which in turn decreases fat storage and weight gain.

- Eating a healthy breakfast puts you on the right path to make healthy food choices all day.  People who eat breakfast tend to eat a healthier diet.

- Eating breakfast increases your metabolism  and allows you to burn more calories during the day.  This is essential if you want to lose weight.

What to do:

- Start by eating a small breakfast if you’re not used to eating first thing in the morning.  A small bowl of Kashi cereal with berries or yogurt with whole wheat toast are great options.

- Have fruit every morning.  Great choices are: blueberries, strawberries, apples, oranges, grapefruit, grapes, melons and bananas.  Fruit is packed with fiber, carbs, vitamins, and minerals.

- Try oatmeal or hot cereal.  They are both high in fiber.  Fiber keeps you digestive tract regular and essential for managing blood sugar.

- If you don’t like oatmeal or hot cereal try whole wheat bread.  One to two slices works well.  Find a bread that has at least 2 grams of dietary fiber per serving.

- Eggs are a great source of protein.  I’d prefer you eat the whole egg if gaining lean muscle is your goal.  You’re losing a lot of protein, folate, selenium, and vitamin B12 when you don’t eat the yolk.
