Happy Halloween!

I have dressed up as a girl who just got a haircut holding a dog!

The Bean is a bit wiggly, but he didn’t get away!

It’s been a good Halloween so far!

I got up  at around 8 AM, ate some breakfast, and headed out into the cool, sunny day for a brisk 30 minutes on the elliptical at the gym. After I got home and rinsed off, it was haircut time! I’m happy with how it looks and honestly I was so focused on getting a haircut today that I still keep forgetting it’s Halloween. I’m pretty much a 30-something homebody and I don’t have kids, so Halloween isn’t a big deal for me currently. I mean, I like putting on bizarre makeup in the comfort of my home and all that, but to me that’s just like . . . a hobby. Not so much a special occasion. One of these days after I’ve lost more weight and I’m feeling more confident I will go out like I used to and rock 80s night at Elysium or something like that. My stompy black boots are biding their time, meanwhile.

Foodwise, things are going okay lately. I may need to mix things up a little with my food choices soon, mainly just to keep myself entertained, but really I am doing surprisingly alright. I’m going to hold course with all I’ve got, excepting pre-planned indulgences on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. I will start the New Year with the downward trend of my weight intact!

Halloween...Didn't Think Of This One!

So today is Halloween. I know that this is not a shock to anyone but for me it was a big early test. Can I have the willpower to not eat the candy that my 20 month and 3 1/2 year old got last night at my work. So far so good. I have avoided the mini twix, the kit kat’s and the resses cups. All I keep thinking of is the cruise on the EPIC…when we are sailing away from Miami a mini twix will seem so…mini!

Let’s hope my willpower stays this strong all weekend!

Oh…I typed this on my palm pre…so please excuse any major or minor typos!

The Biggest Looser...week 1

Well, I made it through week one of TBL at tahoma fitness.  Drum roll….I lost 5 lbs.  Lots of work and obsessing about the food I put in my body.  I feel great.  Actually excited to go work out.  I’m going to try and get into the gym both Saturday & Sunday this week.  I’ve worked out every day (except last weekend) for the last 2 weeks.  I think thats a record.

Week 2 just started….I’m going for 10 lbs. this week.

Episode 6:

Week six opens with a challenge, in which the contestants have to dig through piles of snad in order to find a total of 4 keys. As I watched I thought “What a workout!!” Sand? Digging? Not easy. Add the fact that they had to find 4 needles in a haystack. Now this was a challenge!

The blue team won with time to spare, as they opened a box that revealed their prize: A week at home.

The blue team gave their prize to the black team, and opted to stay on campus and workout with their trainer, Bob Harper. (Smart move, blue team. Touche).

The black team struggles at home, fighting to juggle what was, and will eventually become, their daily routine, while keeping their fitness and health a major priority. Dina has a son, Danny a family, etc… Needless to say, this was a wake up call for most of the black team. Daniel was feeling the pressure to prove himself since he had to endure the challenge of being at home before.

Weigh-in resulted in the black team below the yellow line, which did not come as a shock to me, personally, after the at-home hurdles they had to face this week. Daniel ended up gaining a pound while he was dieting and working out at home, which came as a surprise and disappointment to everyone.

At elimination, Daniel (having gained weight), and Dina (who was seen struggling last week) were the two with the most votes. Dina receivied the final vote and was sent home.

EVOL YOUR PRESSURE

PART 1

As we know, spirit shines out of the undimensional levels of Being into the dimensions of time and space. It creates substance, then forms made of that substance, and then moves through these forms in its creative activity. The movement of spirit in the dimensional world creates pressure. Wherever there’s pressure, there’s movement and change. The purpose for this activity is to create new and expanded forms of experience in Being, so that Being may have an ever-changingand expanding experience of Self.

Bringing all this down to our immediate locale, the Earth, we see that some major forms of pressure have developed in the body of the planet. Pressure is everywhere, of course, but I’m now thinking of such large engines of pressure as are present, for example, in the Earth’s core—where pressure builds, causing volcanic eruption. In the Earth’s crust pressures develop and, when enough is generated, earthquakes occur. In the element of water, when flowing downhill or moving in ocean currents and tides, enormous pressures are created. And in the atmosphere there are high- and low-pressure areas with the subsequent winds, as the air moves from the high- to low-pressure areas. All life forms are affected by these and many other phenomena, but I wish to emphasize these major engines of outer movement.     When people experience pressure, such as the high cost of living, they don’t usually associate it with any of the forces I’ve referred to. But, for example, when the sun shines and heats up water or land, causing high pressure bareas in the atmosphere, this affects climate, which determines crop production, which causes pressure in the human world because of the cost of food, and this affects the cost of many other things. As this occurs, all sorts of social pressures then develop. Some people can afford items, whilst others can’t. One could take a long time illustrating how individu1als’ challenges originate back to some of these larger planetary pressures. Population growth is another source of increasing worldwide pressure.

TIME TO EVOL

More personally, pressures occur within the individual. There are some relatively pleasant ones, as when pressure is relieved in the processes of elimination; in sexual function there is the development and release of pressure. And there’s pressure experienced in all creative activities. These pressures are rather delightful. But, as we know, there are other pressures that are not so pleasant. Maybe something gets blocked in the physical body—the bowel, or circulatory system perhaps—the pressure that develops then is not so comfortable. If there is a personal problem, then mental or emotional pressures can develop. Obviously, in such cases, we seek to alleviate what is causing the oppressive experience. We go to the doctor, perhaps, and we consider many things in order to alleviate mental and emotional pressure. We do this more or less naturally, but what happens when oppressive pressure isn’t readily resolved? Earlier I mentioned that the purpose for spirit being released into the dimensional world is to create an expanded experience of Self, and that nrequires pressure. (Though in the divine Design, this is not oppressive pressure.) We know that pressure is required in physical birth, and so it is in this multidimensional process of continuous birth into a greater experience of Self. So, when we encounter pressure in our lives— whether pressures in relationship, finances, health, or anything else—we need to remember the basic purpose back of all pressure. Cosmically, pressure is designed to expand and develop the experience of a greater Self, and so it is in the holographic lives of individuals. It’s exactly the same process, and when pressure comes we can handle it correctly by remembering what its fundamental purpose is. We allow an ascension process within ourselves. We, like a bar of soap when squeezed, either go up or down.

When pressure comes on we resolve to let our consciousness be expanded upward. We focus on the wonderful quality of our Being and act accordingly in the midst of pressure. We don’t necessarily have to do too much externally. I’m not trying to legislate as to what we do; it’s really just holding in mind the quality that is at the core of the process, so that one is penetrating deeper into the quality of Self. If this is done consistently, the identity becomes established in what we call the angelic Self. This Identity is divine. This qualitative experience is in the undimensional levels of Being, and this is always the place of peace, because in the undimensional levels there is no pressure. So if one can locate this experience in one’s outer consciousness and let the consciousness be absorbed into the qualitative nature of who we really are, then there is a very different experience relative to external pressures. We are not overwhelmed by them.

Loss of Appetite and Nausea

A common ingredient in herbal dietary supplements used for weight loss. Ephedrine can slightly suppress your appetite, but no studies have shown it to be effective in weight loss. Ephedrine is the main active ingredient of ephedra. Ephedra is also known as Ma Huang, not ephedrine. High doses of ephedra can cause very fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, irregular heart beats, stroke, vomiting, psychoses and even death.

Acupuncture for weight loss became popular is 2003 when CNN reported on successful acupuncture weight loss clinics in China. An increase in obesity in China led to the practice of acupuncture for weight loss because Chinese medicinal theory says that overweight people have imbalanced digestive systems.

Nausea is the uneasy and uncomfortable feeling that arises from the stomach. Nausea can result from certain drugs. Nausea comes to a person whenever one comes across a dirty and unhygienic place. Nausea can also occur if a person is traveling in a fast driven car to a hill station through a zigzag road. While in the former instance nausea is a natural means of protest by the person’s subconscious mind to the surroundings,

Serotonin helps you stop eating after consuming the recommended amount of food every day. Low serotonin levels stimulate appetite control centers in the brain, resulting in strong cravings for carbohydrates in particular, and leading you to overeating.

Remedies for memory loss vary greatly depending on the severity of the impairment and its root cause. Memory can be affected by simple things like lack of sleep, stress, poor diet or injury to the head. Correcting these can often be simple too…get more sleep, take steps to reduce or eliminate stressors, eat better, exercise or in the case of head injury rest and time.

Acupuncture weight loss has been shown to strengthen the digestive system, control the appetite and may also improve metabolism causing you to burn calories more quickly. Weight loss has always been a balance between burning more calories than you eat. Acupuncture offers a system to decrease your intake and burn more calories.

Sufficient food intake is important for AIDS patients. It being a wasteful disease, death often occurs due to starvation rather than to other HIV complications. So unless there is a problem of obesity, the patient should eat as much as possible without worrying about gaining weight.

Found naturally in the wild, the cactus-like Hoodia Gordonii plant is indigenous to South Africa. Hoodia Gordonii has been grown and consumed by the local Bushman tribes of South Africa for hundreds of years. They were the first to discover the amazing benefits that the Hoodia plant could offer.

Phentermine hit the spotlight back in the late 1950’s. The FDA first approved the use of Phentermine for treating obesity in 1959 and soon afterward it became a hit. In the 1970’s, a little over a decade later, it became available as Phentermine hydrochloride which began being produced under the Fastin® brand name.

WWJD (what would Jared do)

I was reading a NY Times article that discussed whether the mandate that caloric information be posted on fast food menus in that city was having any effect.  Proponents of the law say that providing diners with this data will help them make better choices and help fight obesity.  So far the findings seem to be mixed.   But what really caught my attention were a couple of lines at the very end of the article about the Subway restaurant chain.

For some time now Subway has heralded its menu as a safe bastion for those people on- the-go that were looking for nutritional responsibility.  Their “Jared” campaign promoted the idea that you could enjoy fast food and still lose weight too.  They were providing nutritional information on some of their products even before it became a requirement in New York.  So what happened when Subway started listing the calorie content on all of their offerings?

You might think that when given an informed choice, at least a few more people would opt for the healthier selections.  Why pick a 700 calorie sandwich when you can probably find a 400 calorie option that you’d enjoy just as much?  In theory, that’s the effect that posting calorie content is supposed to have.  So why did the number of calories purchased at Subway stores more than double during the study period?

Never underestimate the power of advertising!  The study just happened to coincide with Subway’s current “$5 Foot-Long” campaign, which promotes buying a sandwich twice the size of the standard 6 inch offering.  Big and cheap, we can’t resist.  Why plunk down four bucks for a regular sandwich when you can get twice as much for just a dollar more?

Something tells me these $5 specials aren’t part of Jared’s weight control plan.  Even the “low-fat foot-longs” check-in at around 650 calories, about the same as a double-cheeseburger and small fries at McDonald’s.  And other than the “veggie delight”, they also pack 60-100% of your RDA of salt as well.  And then there’s the nitrites….well you get the idea.

Good nutrition takes education, committment, and vigilance.  Good luck if you trust that to anyone other than yourself.

I Can Officially Breath

This morning I received an email back from my program’s graduate secretary.  After trying quite unsuccessfully to get ahold of my policy paper professor to see if he received my final paper, I emailed the graduate secretary to ask her opinion about what I should do.  She’s been great throughout my two years at MSU, so I trusted her to help me if she could.  Well, she managed to get ahold of my professor and told me that he has received my paper.

Really now, how hard would it have been for him to email me that himself?  Or to click the stupid button that comes up when you open a message that has a read receipt request attached?? Or to respond to my voicemail message??? I am truly bewildered.  At least now I know that it’s in, and he’s working on grading it.  That means that I should officially graduate December 2009, unless he decides that my paper sucks so much that it’s not worth a passing grade.  Now that would be depressing.

Health Goals

With that tiny detail out of the way, I think it is well past time that I start working on my health goals. I have not been at all diligent about them for the longest time, and I’m afraid that my health, body, and self-image have suffered for that.  I remind myself that there is no point in regretting things passed, and look toward the future.

October 2009: 218.2 lbs

To start, I am 5′5 and weigh 218.2 lbs.  According to my height and build a healthy weight range for me would be 135-150 lbs.  My personal healthy weight goal is 145 lbs, or a loss of 73.2 lbs.  My timeline to reach this goal is by the end of my 101 in 1001 Challenge, July 16, 2012.  That actually averages out to less than 2.5 lbs per month.  I think I can do that.

Other health related goals that I will be working toward include (#6) being able to run a mile in 15 minutes or less, (#7) completing the 100 Pushups Challenge, and (#8) completing Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred.  In other words, over the next 900-some-odd days I will be working on losing weight, and increasing my endurance and strength.

To attain my goals I will be tracking points with Weight Watchers Online, using various workout DVD’s that I own, and hopefully participating in some fitness classes and personal training sessions. With finances being a little tight right now, and the weather deadheading toward Michigan winter, I will be sticking with the DVD’s at present.

Although I will not be tracking my points or daily food and exercise here explicitly, every week I will do an weigh-in update on Tuesday to summarize my week.

And that’s the plan. 2.5 lbs a month. Ready-set-go!

Researchers from Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging gave resveratrol, a natural compound found in the skin of red grapes and hence in red wine, to one year old mice to see how it would affect those fed a high-fat diet (60% of calories came from fat) compared to mice who received the high-fat diet but no resveratrol, and the control group, comprised of mice that were fed a healthy diet.  Resveratrol was found to help reduce the adverse health effects of weight gain in mice-liver damage, heart disease, and diabetes and reduce the risk of death by up to 31%. In addition to living longer, the mice that received the resveratrol performed better on tests of balance and coordination as they got older vs. the mice that recieved the high-fat diet only in the study. unexpected good news

I felt a bit nervous as i stepped onto the scale today at my weight watchers meeting. It has been two weeks and i would have been happy at less than a two pound gain. To my total surprise i actually lost 3.0 pounds. I am now down to a weight of 202.4 and i’m dangerously close to my year is goal. That goal is to go home weighing less than 200 pounds.

(this tuna is 200 lbs–notice how the man struggles with it)

It is possible that this could be the last week when i’ll weigh over 200 pounds. I don’t know why this is so important to me but it is. I really want to be under 200 pounds. I long to see a “1″ as the first number of my weight. I know there is no big difference between 200 and 199 but in my head there is a big difference. 200 pounds is a football player. Less than 200 pounds sounds totally different. I know that i will still be fat at 199 but i won’t feel as fat.

Stuck in The Middle

I’m getting worse and worse every week at updating my blog, I do feel bad about it but there are just times I haven’t a clue what to blog about and since I dont cook anything fancy or interesting I can’t really post that up either.

This week things havent really changed,  I`m feeling as though I`m trapped in between two people at war. On one side we have the ed niggling at me trying to remind me of how I used to be and trying to lure me back to it and on the other side we have a little part of me like the one I was when I was trying to recover, this side wont let me fall back into my old ways it instead says thats to dangerous you have to much to lose. So I find myself stuck between the two and its almost as though Ive compromised in a way, I`m not losing weight but I`m not gaining much either. Unfortunately I`m still trapped in the cycle of controlling my intake and trying to balance things, I cut back to try and make up for sometime I think maybe I have gone over and then this leads to me feeling guilty and trying to make up for it and then I end up mindlessly eating something like cereal then regretting it and so then next day I cut back and so the cycle goes on.

I am terribly scared of swinging from one disorder to another, I mentioned this before and it is a huge fear of mine.

Anyway onto other things, I’ve been thinking a lot about my future recently and I`m still totally confused about where I want to go. I know at the end of this job I’d love to just pack up and go to Australia but really once I get there what would I do for work? I have no skills or qualifications and I`m talking about moving to get a proper job/life so the usual backpacker jobs of fruit picking wouldnt really support that.

I love forensics as well but I just am clueless about getting to the areas I want. The forensic anthropology degree would be wonderful and Id love it but at the end job wise things are a bit unstable. The pathology is out the window because of the medicine reason.

So Ive been thinking that maybe it would be logical to go and study Radiography. The course is 3 years and I hate the thought of going to Uni but at least at the end with this course I would have some certainty of getting a job. I know three years isnt long but I just feel like its holding me back even more, I just want to get up and go but for the reasons mentioned above I need to think things through and choose what would be best in the long term.

Ok this is getting into a long and boring post, i`ll leave you with a couple of little eats today:

Fage mixed with wheatgerm, agave and chopped almonds

This is my recent favourite snack, it also goes really well with dried apricots.

Chorizo and three bean soup

Unfortunately you cant really see all the proper bits of the soup but in there was chorizo pieces, haricot beans, black turtle beans, black-eyed beans, tomatoes and onion. With these colder nights starting to come in this was really nice to curl up to and makes a change from my usual bowls of pasta or chicken. Just to up the protein a little I had a tin of crab with this, another favourite of mine

Extra hour in bed night and I think I`ll be glad of it

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice... for the Paleo Soul

As Thanksgiving (the US one:-) and Christmas are getting closer, I keep being drawn to spices, and all the flavors of that magical time of the year. This year is going to be a tough Thanksgiving for me because I’ll be leaving Atlanta, GA behind for the new adventure that is Boulder, CO. I have an inner group of friends that I know I’ll miss every hour, but I have to move on with my life, and I have to follow my heart. Boulder is calling me… I’ll be pursuing a master’s degree, at a university and a program that was (almost) created for me.  Add snow, mountains, healthy green living, and I HAVE TO GO!

But, as I look around me now, I’m surrounded by love for the friends I’m going to leave behind.  True friendships are hard to find, and they take time to develop, slowly, forged by the hottest fires…

I was feeling (and still am) a bit melancholic, and reminiscing on all the good times I’ve had in HOTlanta, the ATL, the belly button of the south, and nothing came to mind except my friends… and dinners with friends… and Thanksgivings, and Christmases with friends… and all that led to the creation of these new flavors of yummy, unbelievably delicious (almost) guilt free cupcakes, that I can share with my friends before the departure to greener (indeed) pastures:-)

ALL THE RECIPES ARE PALEO*!!!

First comes the

COCONUT RUM cupcake

, which is such a surprise to the palate. Shaven coconut, infused with rum (essence! These are kid friendly cupcakes), and melting in your mouth… I’m telling you, I WAS SURPRISED at how great these turned out! I know I’m good, but these, WOW, are really really good.

COCONUT RUM PALEO cupcakes

Wheat Free!

Gluten Free!

DAIRY FREE (YES, not even heavy whipping cream!!!)!

There’s STEVIA instead of the SUGAR, and I did add about 10% sugar (the Turbinado, organic kind), just so you wont taste the stevia.  If you love these, but would like them without ANY SUGAR, well, let me know, and I’ll make you a batch of Wheat/Gluten/Dairy/Sugar FREE CUPCAKES!

I’m going to have a tasting at CrossFit North Atlanta, on Friday, 10/23, at the LUNCH WORK OUT, so BE THERE!!!

For seconds:

BRING ON THE CHOCOLATE CHOCOLATE cupcakes!!!

These have been a hit since the days of the cakes… Yes, I admit, I started with cakes, and somehow I found my way into cupcakes. They’re so much cuter:-)

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE PALEO cupcakes

The Double Chocolate cupcake is just as insanely healthy as the Coconut Rum cupcake.  But this one is for the Chocoholic, for the paleo dieter that cannot live without the hypnotic taste of cocoa, for the ladies at that time of the month when nothing else will do.  One taste, and you’re SOLD for life! Wheat Free! Gluten Free!

DAIRY FREE (in this case, I mean dairy free from the Paleo perspective, where heavy whipping cream is considered a fat)!

If you have dairy allergies, I’d check first to make sure you can have these because they do include heavy whipping cream.  There is another option, if you want them dairy free and sugar free fully, just let me know, and you’ll get them free of all dairy & sugar!

YUMMY! You can melt into this cupcake…

And for the third course, I HOPE YOU LEFT SOME ROOM for the

WHITE CHOCOLATE SPICE cupcakes!!!

How do I describe this cupcake??? Have you seen Ratatouille, and that scene where the critic takes the first taste of the ratatouille dish and is immediately transported into his mother’s kitchen, tasting this amazing dish, this comfort food dish, this food that heals???  Remember that one? WELL, these cupcakes do that!  It tastes like Christmas morning, with the family around a big fire, and gifts, and joy, and everything is just right with the world.  Yeah, I am a bit dramatic, but just wait till you taste these!!! You’ll start digging deep for the best adjective to describe these cupcakes…

WHITE CHOCOLATE SPICE cupcakes

With swirls of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, vanilla, and covered in a white chocolate syrup, you’ll be dreaming sweet dreams of cupcake fairies.

Wheat Free

Gluten Free

STEVIA & 10% turbinado organic sugar

This a cupcake for the soul.

WARNING!!!  Eating one WHITE CHOCOLATE SPICE cupcake will elicit a FULL EMOTIONAL RESPONSE!

*PALEO diet, if you don’t know already, is what we humans have eaten for about 1 million years, before agriculture.  So our bodies are still “stuck” in that kind of diet.  The plow has indeed increased the harvest, and therefore provided food for more people, but, BUT, it has also diminished out health by bringing wheat, and other grains (whole or not), into our diet, which has lead to inflammation of tissues, congestion, thickening of the mucosa,  among other things.  Feel free (and I strongly recommend it) to inform yourself about the human digestive system, and the correct list of nutrients we need to sustain ourselves in a healthy body. Week Three: Wrap Up

Since I summarized the action steps in the last post, I’m just hitting the numbers game right now!

THE NUMBERS GAME

  • September 12th: 138.8lbs
  • October 19th: 137.82bs
  • Weekly Loss: 1.6lbs
  • Total Loss: 2.4lbs

I was thrilled by my loss this week. Even though I gave myself “permission” to put the workouts on the back burner, I couldn’t help but feel guilty that I wasn’t making more time for it. But I think this week’s weight-loss proved to me that stress can have a hugely negative impact on my efforts, and sometimes slowing down and taking a step back is the answer.

Turbulence Training for Fat Loss

10-Minute Fat Loss Workouts

By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
Turbulence Training

Last week I helped Men’s Health magazine on a piece about getting workouts done fast. Personally, I think you can get a great body-changing workout done in minutes.

How fast?

I’m talking 10-minutes.

By now, I’m sure you’re asking…

How do you lose fat in only ten minutes?

or

What about the rule that it takes 20 minutes of cardio before you start burning fat?

Well, first of all, as I have said before, the whole idea of a
fat-burning zone or a magical fat-burning time period just doesn’t fit with the common sense approach to fat loss.

People can lose fat without doing any cardio at all – so its clear
that you don’t have to workout for at least 20-minutes with your heart rate at 60% of your maximum heart rate. Fat loss is far simpler than that – and I’ll show you some basic workouts below that crank your metabolism and help you burn calories when you are not exercising.

Second, the results of your training occur outside of the gym
rather than during the workout. That’s why the before-mentioned “increased metabolism” is so important. If you put the right “turbulence” on your muscles in 10-minutes, you can change your body – without even thinking about doing cardio.

So let’s look at the first fat loss in a hurry workout – a
10-minute bodysculpting workout. Let’s say you only have 10 minutes to do your workout today – what should you do?

In this case, you need to combine a warm-up, strength
training, and interval training all into one. So our efforts are
best put forward on bodyweight training.

And you don’t have time for isolation work. Instead, you need to
hit three “hot zones” on the body for maximum metabolism boosting: push muscles, pull muscles, and legs.

By doing so, you’ll hit all the other muscle groups at the same
time. So you’ll do a circuit of soemthing like:

1A) Prisoner Squats (advanced option: 1-Leg Squats)
1B) Pushups (advanced option: Spiderman Pushups)
1C) Inverted Rows (advanced option: Pull-ups; easy option:
Stick-ups)

In the first round of this circuit, you’ll go through it easy.
Perform 25% of the maximum number of reps you can do for each exercise. So if you can do 20 pushups, do only 5 in the first
warm-up circuit. That’s a warm-up circuit.

Then you’ll do as many circuits as you can in the remainder of the 10 minutes. Just go back-to-back-to-back on these 3 exercises. You can rest after the rows/pull-ups for 30 seconds if necessary, but that’s it.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised with how you feel at the end of the 10-minutes. And your metabolism will be elevated for a much longer period than if you trained in the fat-burn zone for 10-minutes.

Okay, now here’s another option, moving into some dumbbell work. The following superset trains the entire body, and focuses on the 3 hot zones.

1A) DB Squat (8 reps per set)
1B) DB Chest Press (8 reps per set)

Use light weights for one warm-up set, and then do as many sets as possible in 10 minutes for the rest of the workout.

In any case, if you find yourself with another 10 minutes, you can up the fat-burning ante by doing 10 minutes of intervals. This too is far more effective for fat loss and fitness than 10 more minutes in the “so-called” fat-burning zone.

Do 3-5 minutes of exercise-specific warm-up.

Then do your intervals for 30 seconds followed by 30-60 seconds of rest. Repeat 3-6 times. Then cooldown.

Okay, now let’s get greedy and assume we have 30 minutes for our workout. We’ll be close to getting maximum results with this
“marathon” duration workout.

First, hit up the bodyweight circuit mentioned above. Do this
twice, nice and easy. That will take 5 minutes off the clock.

Then move into your strength supersets. Following the lead above, you’ll look to train the entire body with only 2 moves. It’s not always easy, but fortunately you can do 2 supersets in this
workout. The strength training will take about 15 minutes as you’ll do 3 sets of 8 per exercise with no extra rest between sets – just long enough to switch exercises.

1A) DB Split Squat (If you have a barbell, use it instead of DB’s)
1B) DB Row

2A) DB Romanian Deadlift
2B) DB Incline Press

Then finish with intervals. For this workout, try another program. Start with a warm-up, then do each “work” interval for 45 seconds, and rest 60 seconds between each interval. Do 4-6 rounds and finish with a cool-down, of course.

I could go on and on with these fast fat loss workouts…and of
course I do, in the Turbulence Training e-book.

I’ll follow up on this article in the future, passing along some of
the exact Turbulence Training workouts that I use with my clients to get the most results in the least amount of time.

Until then, train hard, train safe, and train better than everyone
else in the gym.

Sincerely,

Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS

P.S. Is a lack of time stressing you out?

“No time to exercise” is the #1 reason most people don’t exercise consistently. In fact, a lack of time stresses most people out for many reasons – whether it’s a lack of time to prepare good food, exercise, or be with your family.

That’s why I created Turbulence Training to be the most efficient and effective fat loss program out there.

The warm-up is applicable to your workout, not some 5-minute waste of time on the treadmill.

The strength training supersets shave minutes off your wait time.

And the intervals cut your cardio in half, or more.

Using What Made Us "Fat" To Our Advantage!

Yes, we can use what made us fat to our advantage. One of the main things that made us fat was that we were consistent in eating the wrong kind of carbohydrates.  We were eating the bad carbs, the ones that make us gain weight.  “Consistent” meaning to adhere to the same principles or form or actions. So if we are consistent in eating the low carb foods that keeps our blood sugars level we will lose weight, If we are consistent with eating the high carb foods that raises our blood glucose levels we will gain weight.  I was consistently very good at eating the high carbs foods every day, every hour and that consistency made me fatter and fatter.  When I became “consistent” at eating low carb foods I consistently lost weight. We can use what made us fat to our advantage, we are very good at being consistent, just use it to eat low carb foods and watch the weight consistently fall off. So you choose what to be consistent at, eating the low carb foods or high carb foods to either lose weight or gain weight.  More to come…..(All that consistently made me dizzy!)

Some follow ups...

Putting too much pressure on your meals…

So I was standing in Subway today getting my usual sandwich.  I probably never should have eaten a toasted Italian B.M.T. on wheat, but now that I have, I am hooked.  That could be the best sandwich on earth.  I get it with lettuce, tomato, onions and green peppers, a little bit of ranch dressing and salt and pepper.  I end up skipping the ‘make it a meal’ option because all they have to go with the sandwich is chips.  It would be awesome if they would add a small side salad as an option.  They tried to add an Activia yoghurt for awhile and I was loving that, but it turned out I was the only one ordering the yoghurt, so they stopped offering it.

So, I was standing in line, in a bit of a rush as I was late for a meeting when the guy behind me ordered a 12″ steak and cheese sandwich with extra cheese and a 6″ B.M.T. with extra meat.  I knew without even turning around that this guy was going to be large.  I am assuming he was only eating one of the sandwiches, but still here is a classic example of putting too much pressure on your meal.  I totally get where he is coming from.  He probably thought about it a dozen times before committing to the double meat and cheese.  In the end, he probably thought that he deserved to be very full and he knew it was hours until dinner, so he went for it and ordered the extra meat and cheese.    When I was paying for my sandwich the guy added ranch dressing and thousand island…  I looked over and he was at least 80 pounds overweight.  The fact is, us unfit people love our food.  We do.  If we continually choose bad meal choices we will continue to be overweight.  If we put too much pressure on our meals we will be unable to make good meal choices.  It is a terrible cycle.

Subway has a ton of good meal options.  The 6″ Italian B.M.T. isn’t a great choice.  It is 450 calories before the little bit of ranch dressing (which isn’t bad).  Mind you, if you cover it in vegetables it really does make a good meal (It would be wise to drop the salami and pepperoni and maybe add turkey instead by the way).

A note about the good things that Subway does…

I am not the worlds biggest fan of subway and their Jared story.  I don’t think Subway is the healthiest choice on earth, but that said, they are infinitely healthier than many other choices.  Here is there nutritional criteria for children’s meals.  I wonder if we could use these standards as the standards for all fast food kids meals:

SUBWAY® Nutrition Criteria For Children’s Meals

Subway® recognizes the importance of providing children with a well-balanced meal that includes a variety of food groups. Our goal is to provide a meal that can fit into a daily menu that is consistent with the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The SUBWAY KIDS’ Pak™ meal includes grains, vegetables, fruits, lean protein (with the exception of the Veggie Delite®) and dairy when milk is ordered.

All the kids’ meals also meet the specific nutrition criteria:

  • Less than 500 calories
  • Low Fat/ <30% calories from fat
  • Low Saturated Fat <10% calories from saturated fat
  • Low Cholesterol
  • Trans Fat Free, meals contain absolutely no partially-hydrogenated oil
  • Contain at least 1 serving of fruit
  • Less than 5% calories from added sugar
  • SUBWAY® Marketing Policy For Children

Any advertising on children’s programming features the SUBWAY FRESH Fit for Kids™ meals, which meets the above listed nutrition criteria. SUBWAY FRESH Fit for Kids™ meals compliment an active lifestyle and are shown in advertising with a mini low-fat sandwich, apple slices and low fat milk. The kid’s meal automatically comes with 100% juice or low fat milk (not soda).

The things you run into at a GNC….

I was searching GNC on Twitter and I discovered that Khloe and Kim Kardashian were at GNC in LA and Las Vegas this last week as part of the promotion for their Cleanse and Detox.  I took a little while to chuckle to myself, after all, it isn’t every day that I think of the Kardashians and Jillian Michaels as having shared fitness advice.  Although I think this is funny, if I was Jillian Michaels I would be mortified.  After all, Jillian Michaels has significant achievements to be proud of.  She is a talented, accredited personal trainer who has helped millions.  I don’t even know who Khloe Kardashian is, except according to a magazine at the checkout at 7-11 someone called her fat when she wasn’t (or something to that effect, I didn’t quite read the cover and still it seeped into my unconscious).  All I know about Kim Kardashian is she was in a home made sex tape and she has a surprisingly large yet firm bum.  I am not sure if either of these things counts as an achievement, but maybe they do, who am I to judge.

The thing is, I was wondering why I felt that something was wrong with the world when I heard that Jillian Michaels was selling cleanses, detoxes and diet pills (with of course the exclusive EXTREME line of products available only at GNC), yet when I heard about the Kardashians doing the same thing I was thinking that makes sense.  Am I right to feel this way?  What do you think, is it hypocritical of me to expect more from Jillian Michaels?

I guess when you are famous for nothing, it makes perfect sense to put your name on any product that will help get your name out there.  It is the rule of promotion in a world where you don’t have anything to offer to help you get your name out.  Get in front of the camera as much as you can.  It is even better if you can get paid to do it, but it doesn’t matter what you are in front of the camera for, sex tapes, diet pills, celebrity break ups, whatever.

The other thing that struck me about the 2 products is that the Quicktrim product suggests that the diet cleanse is for when you ‘absolutely, positively MUST fit into your favorite dress or jeans, QuickTrim® Fast Cleanse™ will help you make an impression!”.  If you are interested in losing a bunch of weight really quickly, you don’t care what you are doing to your body, and you don’t mind the fact that all of the weight will come right back because it isn’t fat you lost, you can’t beat a good cleanse with diuretics.  There is some truth to the claims of this product (although there is a lot of questionable information as well).  I can’t believe that I have become so inured to product lies that I am applauding a little bit of truth from a product.  BTW,  I wonder, is the * going to become synonymous with product claims that have not been evaluated by the FDA…

Jillian Michaels New Spinoff…

Speaking of Jillian Michaels,  apparently NBC has offered her a new TV show where she is going to go to people’s homes and getting them fit.  Sounds awesome.  I just hope she gets to bring her cleanses and diet pills with her.  If she really uses and believes in these products to get fit, then I hope she can stand up to the Network and use the real techniques she promotes to finally show us, the general public, the consumers, her real program for weight loss.  I understand that the biggest loser uses her as a trainer, so she may not be able to bring all of her techniques to assist the contestants there, but I am betting that given this show is hers, we will finally see all of the methods that she uses.  How have the discussions gone with the Network Jillian?  Are they good with the cleanses and diet pills?  I would love to hear how that is going.

HOILDAY Temptation!!!!

Every year we face a similar dilemma. While we all love to enjoy getting together and celebrating the holidays with friends and family come January we face the consequences of our actions and often find ourselves finding a few (or sometimes more) extra pounds. Is there any way we can actually reverse this trend and take off a few pounds this year? You bet there is. Here are a few things that will likely produce good results. The first and probably most important thing is to spend at least 1/2 hour to 45 minutes every day in an activity that demands bodily movement that you enjoy. You will note I don’t call this “exercise” which is often associated with “work”. Just find something you like to do that requires movement. The key is that you need to enjoy the activity to ensure you are consistent. I’ve found walking and cycling my best choices. When weather does not cooperate you may want to take a trip to a local indoor mall for your walking and do some people watching while you’re at it. This is a great time for doing some holiday shopping as well. You should eat before you go and avoid the food courts. An average 45 minute brisk walk will burn about 450-500 calories and doing this every day will actually increase your body’s efficiency in burning fat. In addition to exercise you should know how to deal with holiday eating. The key here is food choice awareness coupled with moderation. As far as food choices feel free to load up on the vegetables (unless heavily buttered) and fruits. Be conservative with the nuts and meatsand ultra conservative with the refined starches (ricepotatoeschips. Etc). Stay away from sweets and alcohol. Sweets are high in calories and just one or two can reverse the efforts in your 45 minute daily fun activity. Alcohol not only provides empty caloriesit dulls your judgment when making your other food choices. Another technique in holiday eating is to either use smaller plates (if you are serving) or only fill your plate half way (if you are being served) when sitting down to your holiday meal. For drinking try to stick with water  Most people do not drink enough water which is essential in maintaining optimal health. If you must have alcohola light wine should be your choice but if you do this you should probably skip desert completely. But what if I blow it you say? I ate too much and so I’m beyond repair. Don’t worry. Just double your activity for the next two days and you will be fine. Understand that nobody’s perfect get over the guilt and move on. If the activity is something you really enjoy you should have no problem in doing it longer. If notthen you need to pick something else. Planning a family activity such as skating or skiing could also provide for a good family experience and the additional calorie burn you need. Finallya principle I often use is to avoid eating paste 7:00pm every day. The earlier in the day you eatthe better it is for obtaining or maintaining your ideal weight. There are also some effective supplements that can help obtain your health goal showever it is always important to augment any supplement regime with good old fashioned fun physical activity. Do it with someone you enjoy to be with and it is even better.

Obesity In America and it’s relations

Obesity is the number one disease in America. Day by Day more people are looking into getting physically fit. There are two types of fitness, one is health related and the other is performance. The health aspect of fitness is related to doing exercises in getting your blood pressure lowered, prevent heart attacks and so forth. The performance side is for athletic type people and that tests for agility, balance and body power. Overall being healthy gives you more energy to do the things you couldn’t do before and it also makes you feel better about yourself mentally.

The benefits of exercise is to make you feel and look better, to have more energy and improve your health in general. A misconception is that if you are overweight you cannot be fit but that is not true. You can be physically fit and still be over what you should weigh. Exercising can lower your chance of heart attack , burn calories so that you can lose weight. Doctors have done studies that show that you can think quicker and clearer if you are more fit. Studies have also

shown that people are less likely to be depressed or have anxiety.

Before you begin and type of exercise program check with your doctor to make sure that it is ok. There are many forms of exercise that you can depending on your fitness level and interests. You should pick an activity that you will enjoy so that you won’t get bored.

There is sports who those people that like to play tennis, basketball or racket ball. For others there is aerobics, Pilates, weight lifting and bicycle riding. Then there are people who like to go to the gym and use the Stair climber, Treadmill and Stationary Bicycles. Some people only do types of exercise that don’t really feel like exercise such as dancing or walking.

No matter what type of exercise that you do make sure you execute properly so that avoid injury. Overall, have fun!

Heading towards weight loss

These days, talking about weight loss has become the most preferable topic to discuss around. Losing weight can improve your health and keep you away from sickness. Eating more than one needs, causes overweight. This happens because the excess energy supplied to the body gets converted into fat. If you follow a healthy diet and routine exercise, you can lose weight. Losing weight should be a gradual process.

We get energy from the food that we eat and we require the energy to carry out the energy to carry out the daily activities and for proper functioning of the body. We must take the time to enjoy a leisurely meal without constantly trying to do something else. If you end up rushing meals and try to get too many other things done while eating, you may then prevent the food from digesting properly. You can control your weight by inculcating good eating habits along with regular exercise. You can lose weight without dangerous diets and weight loss pills by following a healthy diet and performing a routine of daily exercise. Here are the tips to be followed towards achieving weight loss goal.
1.Be conscious of your calories you eat per day. It also depends upon the lifestyle of the person.
2.You must spread your three big meals into many but small meals a day which will help you to control your hunger.
3.You can make the necessary changes in your eating and exercise habits depending on your body weight.
4.You must stop eating when your stomach is full. Some people try to force themselves to finish what remains in the plate for whatever reason.
5.Walking, dancing and swimming are just a few of the activities assists you to lose weight and maintain weight loss.

People who use weight loss supplements are often in a hurry to receive quick benefits and they do little to change their life style. This results into dramatic weight loss, initially but later they might find that they have gained the weight back over time. Hence if a person uses weight loss pills, he or she should also commit to a life style of healthy eating habits followed by regular exercise. It is always advisable to consult your doctor before using a weight loss supplement. You must maintain a healthy lifestyle while taking a weight loss supplement.

There are prescription weight loss drugs and non-prescription weight loss supplements. For cosmetic weight loss, prescription weight loss drugs are supplied. Also Herbal weight loss pill is an example of non-prescription weight loss supplement. Don’t rely on people who advise you to have a weight loss pill, no matter what you eat. Weight loss pills can help you to a certain extent but they should not be the focus of your goal. These days we come across a lot of products relating to fat burners, fat absorbers, metabolism boosters and appetite suppressors. At times, even herbal supplements which are natural may not be suitable for you. The only way to maintain healthy weight is to aim for a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity and healthy eating are the two biggest pointers towards.

And She’s Off … to a Very Slow Start

So I’m a week and a half into my itsy bitsy teeny weenie Hawaii bikini challenge and I’ve lost a whopping 1.5 pounds of the 11 pounds I set out to lose. This leaves an intimidating 9.5 pounds left to lose in the next four and a half weeks. So when I do the math, and we know how much I love math, I have to lose about 2 and 1/3 pound per week between now and November 14.

This picture was taken last weekend. Almost bikini ready

This seems daunting. And it is. For someone at my stage in the game, that much weight loss per week is relatively high. New dieters probably wouldn’t find it all that challenging, but for someone like me who’s already below goal, it might be impossible.

I know what the problem is. Exercise. As in, not enough of it. I’m not going to make any excuses here. I don’t make excuses because I don’t take excuses. It’s my belief that when you’re a bariatric patient your success or your failure is linked to your behavior which is under your control. The end.

Ok, so to that end, it’s time to step up the exercise routine into high gear. *ugh* I exercise, but honestly, I hate it. I really thought if I did it enough that one day I would come to love it. All those endorphins would kick in and I’d finally experience that runner’s high that’s supposedly so addicting. What bunk.

But that’s beside the point. The fact of the matter is that the exercise needs done and I’m the one who must be doing it. Will itsy bitsy teeny weenie bikini girl do her exercise, meet her goal, wear her bikini and save the day? Find out when we return with the next episode of (cue the echo effect) Bikini Watch.

Making a change

I have been going back and forth on this blog for a while. Trying to come up with a solid plan of attack on what to write. I have my family blog I update pretty much everyday. Family and friends read it. I need a place where I can write things that I really don’t think they would care too much about.

I have decided that this is the place. I am journaling my other side here, nothing wicked, just the other stuff going on. Like the fact that I want to lose weight but have no motivation, I want to post pictures of things other than my daughter (even though they are so funny, check out the  Left 4 Dead dance  freakin’ hilarious), I want to write about me and all my glory.

I want to be selfish and curse and write about how flippin hard it is to lose the baby weight that is attached to my stomach and butt, how hard it is to squish a thigh into pants that are a too tight and how happy I am to be changing all that eventually.

Anyway, I have a sweet tooth so I am going to make a s’more (graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate…yummy). Then I will weigh myself tomorrow morning and start from there.

Friday is a good day to start right????

Right before the weekend, when the wine pours like water out of the faucet and the food is decadent and sinful.

Maybe I will start Monday…right now I am going to enjoy that s’more.

Diabetes Must Be Taken Seriousely - Diet is a big factor in blood sugar and after one week on Take Shape For Life he tested in the "Normal" range!

101 for Diabetics – - Getting your Blood Sugars in a “Normal” range, is crucial to getting this disease under control.

Joe is about 30 pounds over weight. Mid 50’s. Yard work and home projects are his exercise, other than that he works behind a desk all week long.  He’s married and has been pre-diabetic for about four years now.  Joe is taking oral medications only. He has not had to go the route of insulin shots, thank God for him.

Have a look at Joe’s BEFORE chart going back to 2007  – Blood Sugar Levels:

A Blood Sugar "Normal Range" is 90 to 110 give or take...

About May of 2009 in addition to his Metformin, Glipizide was added (1 twice a day) to try and bring down his levels. It worked - but it caused his levels to drop too low, so he had to back off the dosage.

Glipizide 1 tablet twice a day was added to the Metformin to bring his levels down.

Then Joe decided to go on Take Shape For Life program.  He started Sunday September 20th, 2009.

About a week after he started losing weight …he checked his blood sugar levels.

They had dropped into a “Normal” range.

Now,  just finishing his 3rd week his blood sugars are in the 90’s.  Joe shared with me that he had not taken either of his medications this past Sunday and his sugars tested 97 in the morning and 90 in the evening. Joe is doing great!

His Blood Sugars are testing Normal!

Diabetes & Obesity Are Taking Over Our Country!

Time to get both under control.

Please check with your Doctor before starting a weight loss program.

If you’d like more information about Take Shape For Life Diabetics Program please give me a call at (916) 812-2378

Visit Take Shape For Life Web Site

I’m delighted for Joe and his family.

Joe – Keep up the great work … and I’ll see less of you soon!

PS: Thanks for sharing!

Corporate Consumer Contradiction

I often find that the overall culture of our corporate consumerist dystopia is mired in contradictions that are likely to be making a lot of people dazed, lost, confused and afraid of opening their mind lest it be utterly blown away by the sheer lack of sense in the overall state of society.

I mean, we’re told we need tighter buns, flatter abs, softer skin, and yet we have Big Macs, soft drinks and a wide assortment of chocolates, candies and other nasty junk launching their colourful assault on our eyes and minds from their places on store shelves and TV commercials.

We’re told we need to go to school and get an education to make it anywhere in life, yet we’re expected to be docile and stupid… all the better for the elites when they want to sell us crap, send us to war or sign away our rights with yet another law that is intrusive of our liberties. And of course, the corporate oligarchs running the industries necessary for such things are laughing all the way to the bank as they count their hundreds of millions of dollars they’re not likely to be spending while people who work harder, more labour intensive jobs, breaking their backs and filling their lungs with coal dust earn only a fraction of that.

But those hard-working middle-class shouldn’t have to worry if they get injured or sick doing their back-breaking jobs… because the health insurance companies are there to pick up the bill when it happens. Oh wait… you had a yeast infection ten years ago? That’s a pre-existing condition? The procedure and medication are ‘experimental’? Oh well… sucks to be you… just do us a favour and die quickly OK?

We go to the bank… see about opening an account so we can ‘make our money grow’ like their ads say… maybe get a debit card to use to pay the bills… oh don’t do that… we want you to get a credit card. Its so much easier to get stuff on a credit card right? Yeah… your money grew all right… it grew when it started to belong to the banks who are charging interest on that new big screen plasma TV you couldn’t afford but bought anyway.

By the way… on the subject of television… lets say you’re watching all the free-to-air networks… and rightly conclude that the content on there is rubbish. Then you see an ad on those channels for pay TV and you get a set top box and a Foxtel subscription… and guess what… you’re still getting the same rubbish… only a lot of it is imported from the UK rather than the US. And the ad breaks aren’t any shorter either… hmmm….

Libraries… reading classes? Oh hell yeah lets get all of our children to read everything they can get their hands on. Oh wait… Harry Potter… evil manual for witchcraft… can’t have that. Teenagers and adults… you’d better be reading too. Oh… you want to read The God Delusion? Heathen swine! You’d better be reading the Bible. Nineteen Eighty Four? What have you got to go questioning the government for? Don’t you know they are here to help? How about Twilight then? Oh you like the emo Mormon vampires? That’s OK. Don’t forget to go watch the movie and buy all the merchandise as well… that’s a good little consumer slave.

Is it any wonder the search for consistency in society, and even the striving for consistency in your own life and mind is so difficult? We’re treated to this massive clusterfuck of contradictory messages and we’re expected to take all of them in.

Who's Your Guru?

I read the tragic story of the Spiritual Warrior retreat held by James Arthur Ray, where 2 people died, and 19 were taken to the hospital after being in a sweat lodge. This was a 5 day retreat where people paid 10,000 dollars (that is NOT a typo folks) a head. Quick math, that would be 2000 dollars per day. Why??? What possible knowledge could be imparted, that would be worth 2000 dollars per day? A once in a lifetime vacation or experience may be worth that. But paying someone else to look for answers about what my life is supposed to be about? Don’t freakin’ think so!!

Now that’s a weird statement coming from a Health Empowerment Coach, however, I help clients find what they need within themselves, as opposed to looking for answers outside of themselves. People want the quick fix, the easy way out, so they want to be handed the answers. And people spend big bucks for that promise of getting those answers, a promise that rarely delivers.

How do I know this? I was one of those people. I never paid 2000 a day, but I didn’t have it. If I did, who knows…but I can’t honestly say I wouldn’t have. I tried all kinds of diets, programs, shakes, supplements, gyms, personal trainers, exercise equipment, and classes. AND…they all cost money, and none worked. Why? – a few reasons #1, I wanted the quick fix and didn’t get it, so I gave up; #2, my self esteem was so bad that I couldn’t deal with the scale, another device of extreme torture. If I was weighing myself, I’d get on the scale numerous times during the day, because of course I must have lost weight during the course of the day. If someone else was weighing me in, the subsequent statements which followed were just more torments: “Oh guess you had a bad week”; “Hmmm, you only lost 1/2 of a pound”; “Are you following the program correctly?”, etc. The lack of self esteem also made me prey to those skinny personal trainers I wanted desperately to look like, so I took their word as law, only to find out later after injuries and bad information, that they probably knew little more than I did, they just looked a lot better. {By the way…always do your own homework and ask lots of questions when hiring a trainer. Never assume they know what they are doing.}

There is no quick fix…it took me a long time to realize that. I put the care of my body into other people’s hands, people that told me I would achieve all my goals by listening to what they had to say, by following their program, by using their product. All my gurus, and I followed them faithfully and blindly, believing their every promise.

So who’s your guru? Think long and hard about that, because the guru you should be listening to the most is yourself.

The Couple’s Guide to Eating Healthy

Did you know research shows couples tend to share similar body fat levels when they meet–and are likely to stay that way over the years. Similarly, other research shows that if one partner improves his/her habits, the other may follow suit. Here are a few healthy eating tips to live healthfully and lose unwanted fat if necessary.

1. Bond over breakfast: Many studies show that breakfast eaters are less likely to be overweight than those who skip their morning meal. Set aside 15 minutes to eat together before you head out the door.

2. Avoid snacking together: Just because one of you is a snacker doesn’t mean you both have to be. Stop and consider whether you’re actually hungry or just “eating with company” before digging in, and encourage him or her to do the same.

3. Preplan your portions: If dinner at home means lingering over a long meal at the dining room table, dole out a portion before you sit down and leave any leftovers in the kitchen. With the extras out of sight, you’ll both be less likely to overeat.

4. Break up the takeout: If one of you craves a hearty meal (like pizza), but the other wants something a bit lighter (like sushi), place orders at two different restaurants and eat at home as a couple.

5. Make one meal two ways: Buy groceries for a shared meal that you can each personalize to your liking and to that day’s caloric needs.

6. Stretch your drink: Men can usually tolerate more alcohol–and calories. Instead of joining him for seconds, have seltzer with a dash of orange juice and a squeeze of lime. Or ask for half wine and half seltzer, and join in both rounds.

How to Get Started with a Weight Loss Plan

So you decided to lose weight recently for whatever reason and now you are looking for a well thought out program. Congratulations on taking the first step to a healthier better you. The next step is to decide which approach is better for you.

You can either get on a diet program that has been proven to work many times or you can make yourself your own weight loss plan by learning the basics.

Choosing a Diet Program

With the thousands of diet products out there it can be pretty hard to get lost in all the hype. Even when you haven’t thought about losing a few pounds you turn on the TV and there are commercials with their products trying to get you to buy now.

The best way to find a diet program right for you is by researching which is pretty much what you are doing now. Take some time to learn the basics of losing weight. That way you will have a better judgement when you search for a solid diet.

Ideally everybody wants a weight loss plan that is not too strict or too generous but just right to the point when they feel satisfied but at the same time lose weight. You should also take into consideration of where you stand now. Be honest with yourself. How much do you weigh? Do you need to lose weight very fast or is it more of a long term thing?

Are your eating habits really that bad? If you have been eating nothing but junk food in large amounts then you would want to get on a diet plan that is not too strict. That way you don’t shock your system and end up regretting it later. So think about that for a second.

Click on this link to learn more about the top recomended diets.

Going your Own Way

Of course it is possible to learn how to lose weight own your own. All it takes is dedication and the willingness to learn. The best way to do this is to learn everything you can and then take action to lose weight.

Now there are many diet guides and books that can teach you everything you need to know to lose weight and look fabulous. But you can just read about it on the internet. There are many reliable websites that are full of weight loss information. Just keep on reading and learning how to eat right and exercise.

Now is going your own path to weight loss recommended? It all depends on what you want to do. Some people have no problem losing weight without some help. Others find it much easier to lose weight with a predesigned weight loss plan.

But you should always avoid going on diets that are too strict. Many people who try to lose weight end up getting stuck in what experts call “yo-yo dieting”. This happens when someone goes from diet to diet without seeing the results they want and end up waisting time. That is why the only way you can start losing weight is by learning for yourself.

So if you want to learn the baiscs of weight loss before getting lost in the hype then learn about some weight loss tips here.

Battle of the Bulges: My Weight Loss Program

So, here i am- sedentary, all vessels rigged with caffeine and ruminating about nothing. tough call especially for someone who vowed to pursuing his goals. talk is not cheap, really. i contemplated on deleting all the things i chronicled here in WP as well as from 2-3 other blogsites that i painfully maintain. there is just nothing to write. i am fed on writing about myself. right now, i just want to escape, fly, away, to that limbo that i prayed about last night-” LORD, i know you are always with me. within me. i want to live a life that you want me to live. i want to rise above all my self-doubts, faithlessness, cynicism and all shades of negativism. lead me, LORD. i pray for strength, courage, faith and wisdom. i got nothing else, but you. please save me”. that was it. i want to start anew. to have a renewed heart. maybe i’m burned out from all the work and studying, but hey! i am a machine, a mean one (wahahahaha!0). anyway, i need a refresher. probably another 2-3 km run. sh#$$! flight of ideas… losing grip. yeah! weight loss. at 30, 31 in approximately 26 days(woot woot), i weigh 54-55 kg with a BMI of 22-23. the last weight-check showed an increase of flank/abdominal fat/body fat from last year- 19.3 to 22.8. i am now the epitome of the fat, short, bald grumpy man(i prefer to be called, “kid”). for every endeavor, i believe that there should be a plan of sort. before the plan, a rationale. so, here’s why:

1. strong family history of diabetes mellitus- 2 aunts, 2 uncles, cousins, dogs and tabby cats
2. hypertension and cardiac problems in the family
3. shifting moods and indescribable affect
4. control. need control. M-U-S-T control.
5. aesthetic reasons. yup, i’m mr. vanity today. if i live tomorrow, maybe i won’t, but today, yea, give it to me baby!
6. i need it. my gist clamors for it for no particular reason. so, there goes my short list.
whatever…

next, the PLAN!!!!

Skipping Lunch

I don’t like skipping lunch. I try not to skip lunch. But yesterday and today, I kinda had to. I only lost 2kg last month, which my nurse was quite happy with and I am okay with it too as long as I lose more this month. To that end, I am trying not to eat quite as much (I had a week off work and also off counting so strictly – well, I still counted, but I allowed myself more) and I am going to stick to an average of 1000 cal per day and not feel like I have to play catch up.
We had dinner with family yesterday, net result about 300 calories over my daily target, and that was with the skipped meal. Succumbed to a glass of orange juice when I should have asked for water. Same again with a glass of wine >_> I should have just had one or the other. Plus, the chicken sauce was made from creme fraiche and soft cheese. I just gave up! I am not giving up today though.

Sometimes I feel good if I don’t eat; I read somewhere that hunger doesn’t let you down and sometimes, feeling hungry means I know that I’m doing it right. But. Not always.

On the positive side, I am getting close both to losing 100lbs and getting into the weight bracket to use a wii fit! I can’t wait!

Are You Having Hard Time Losing Your Extra Weight

Are you nervous about your increasing weight? If all the attempts such as diets or medication that you have put to trim weight has gone in vain, you can yet hope for some fruitful effects Maybe you need to suppress your appetite to get the result.

Get something natural that has natural appetite suppressant elements. Are you stressed about the bad effects that might take place by using appetite suppressant? Preferring medical help to suppress appetite can be damaging. Avoid medicinal drug and prefer nature’s wonder herb – hoodia gordonii. Hoodia gordonii works as a natural appetite suppressant without any side effects. You can find numerous supplements of hoodia gordonii. The most popular supplement is hoodia gordonii plus.

Hoodia gordonii plus is not a medicinal drug. The super stores and medicine stores sell hoodia gordonii plus as health supplement. The best Hoodia gordonii plus is made from the real extracts of the herb that is found in the Kalahari Desert of Africa. Hoodia gordonii plant looks thick and spiky like a cactus plant but it is not. The common tribe of Kalahari, the Sun Tribes are eating hoodia gordonii since ages.

The tribes use the herbaceous plant so that they do not feel hungry for long hours as they have to keep hunting without food for very long time. Hoodia’s odour is very strong and helps to burn fat and raise metabolic activities in the body. Scientists and researchers worked very hard and brought the usefulness of hoodia gordonii herb to us in the form of hoodia gordonii plus.

Why you should select hoodia gordonii plus over other similar varieties? Hoodia gordonii plus works effectively with the combination of elements such as fat burning, metabolism enhancing and appetite suppresser. However, the major issue is the duplicate hoodia gordonii pills. As a customer, you have to be cautious while purchasing hoodia gordonii plus. You must be 100% sure that you are buying original and the best hoodia gordonii plus, that is made only from the hoodia’s extracts of South Africa.

Brain passes indication that the stomach is empty and food is wanted and Hoodia gordonii just dupes the brain in this part. When brain sends signal of empty stomach, we take food and sometimes eat more than what is actually required. Hoodia gordonii prevents over eating as it functions as an appetite suppressant.

The presence of P57 element in hoodia gordonii plus helps to restrict hunger. P57 actually fools the brain by making it realize that the body does not require food and has got adequate energy. Not only that, but the Hoodia Gordonii Plus also has other active ingredients such as Garcinia Cambogia, Magnesium and Green Tea extracts, which make it much more effective than those ordinary hoodia diet pills.

Hoodia gordonii plus is equally efficient in burning fat and raising metabolic process along with its excellent appetite suppressant ability. This is done because of the presence of green tea extracts in hoodia gordonii plus. For reducing weight in a healthy manner, the combination of green tea and P57 is really very effective. Hoodia gordonii is effective as well as safe. Reap its benefits without any side effects.

Weight 278.4, Pounds to go: 118.4

Two solid pounds this week! That feels good. It also brings with it a couple of exciting things… on my Progress page, my starting weight and current weight are finally far enough apart that they don’t overlap each other on the graph, and I lose a Point from my daily Points target. I’m actually happy about that, not just because that means I’ve lost enough weight to justify it, but because on most days I have a hard time meeting my Points target so this will make it a little bit easier. I know, woe is me, I have to eat more than I’m used to in order to lose weight! Crazy, I know, but it’s working. That’s because I’m getting a steady amount of food in me daily instead of barely eating some days and loading up on pizza or deep fried foods on other days. Weight Watchers keeps me in check and I think it really helps to have a program to follow so that you don’t eat too much OR too little.

I may actually make my 5% weight loss goal on or around my guesstimated date of Oct. 15! That will be great because I’m really looking forward to buying those Season 5 DVDs of The Office. Love that show. Jim and Pam get married next week! Oh yeah, it will also be great because I’ll weigh less than I have for awhile hee hee

Commencement

On October 4th, I will catapult myself into my new lifestyle.  Currently, I live on a diet of ginger snaps and green tea.  White castle burger and french fries.  An occasional bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats.  I last exercised in early July. But that is precisely why my calves are squishing into soggy bread bowls when I squeeze them.  Where there used to be a dimpled muscle is now a slab of fat.  Where my ass was tight is now a jiggly mess just waiting to turn into cellulite.

My body was once a tool I kept in top condition.  But that was 5 years ago, and now I’m a lazy loaf.

So on October 4th I refine my lifestyle.  The only major changes will be the diet and exercise regiment, and those are large enough changes in and of themselves.  For the plan you can check out the Reference Files and see how I’m keepin it tight.

Don't Follow the Crowd!

Eating right poses many challenges, not the least of which is peer pressure. How many times have we failed because the people around us don’t seem to care that we are trying to be healthy? One of the greatest “aha moments” I’ve had is: Being healthy is much more important than what others think!

I must admit, my current situation is pretty enviable in that regard. I’m a stay-at-home dad, I do the grocery shopping and therefore live in a pretty controlled environment. On top of that we haven’t lived in Las Vegas long, so we don’t have a ton of friends here. Most of our family lives in WI, so outside influence on our nutrition is at a minimum. I really only have to guard the backdoor so that nothing unhealthy comes in the house.

My situation wasn’t always so easy. My wife’s current situation more closely resembles what I used to go through on a daily basis. Every day people bring in treats and leave them in a convenient location for everyone to enjoy. Invariably, these treats are sugar laden and are anti-nutritious as a result. When these goodies are present, they are difficult to avoid!

I’m a recovering cake and doughnut addict. I haven’t eaten either in quite some time, but my exposure to them used to be on a daily basis. I worked at Office Depot in seminary. Whenever someone had a birthday a cake would show up. I had a very difficult time passing it up. I don’t think I ever was successful in doing so. In fact, I usually ate several pieces. To make matters worse, I love frosting, so I’d always take the corner AND scoop up any frosting that was left behind by others.

While in seminary various organizations would donate day-old pastries and bread to the seminary for free consumption by the students. I knew exactly what day and time to expect the delivery. I always made sure to be there promptly. Unfortunately, doughnuts don’t fill you up, so I’d eat several. As you can imagine, I put on a lot of weight in seminary…about 40 lbs.

I tell those stories to illustrate a point: our culture does not set up well for healthy nutrition. The grand majority of people out there don’t care about their own nutrition, let alone yours!

Here are some common scenarios to consider along with my opinion on how to handle them:

1. FREE food constantly available in the workplace – Don’t eat it just because it is free. We all love a bargain, but eating junk food is no kind of bargain. You will pay for it in MANY ways. If it isn’t healthy, don’t eat it…even if whoever brought it is slightly offended that you won’t try it. Just politely excuse yourself from eating it because you are trying to be more careful about what you eat. If you ever have opportunity or desire to bring food to work, then consider bringing fresh fruit. You won’t be popular, but there are certain to be a few of your co-workers who will appreciate a break in the onslaught of junk food. Harmful cultural practices can only be changed if someone is willing to initiate the change.

2. Dinner at a family/friend’s house where NOTHING can be considered actual food, let alone healthy – If you know from experience that your friend/family is going to prepare nothing but anti-nutritious food, then politely insist on bringing an awesome salad or fruit tray. Also, eat a little nutrient dense food before you go so you don’t feel like cowing on stuff that isn’t good for you. I personally make it a practice to eat whatever the host/hostess serves, but just one serving…healthy or not. That way if what is served is unhealthy, you can just tell them that part of your approach to eating is to only eat one serving. Eating bad for you food every once in a while isn’t going to kill you, so don’t make enemies by refusing to eat what you are served in such situations (I’ve made that mistake with family before). People generally tire quickly of someone who is constantly criticizing how bad for you their food is (again from experience). You have my permission to skip dessert though! Most people understand that part of a meal is optional. If they are mad at you for refusing, then that is their problem! If you typically eat a healthy diet, you’ll be fine. Just get back on track the very next meal.

3. Parties, holidays, vacations and special occasions – We often use these times as excuses to let loose and eat whatever we want. Problem is, if you look at a calendar, you won’t find too many weeks in the typical American schedule that doesn’t include one of these types of days…or weeks. Therefore, you have to party smarter. If you MUST let loose on occasion, pick one special occasion per quarter that you will allow yourself to indulge in whatever you want. Even in those cases do so in moderation. On the other occasions just make the best choices available at the party. Load up on the fruits and veggies if they are available. Offer to bring them if they won’t be. Skip as much of the sugary stuff as possible. Learn to enjoy parties for the people instead of the food. Learn to enjoy vacations/travelling for new experiences and activities. Better yet, try to host parties yourself. That way you get to plan the menu. If others offer to bring stuff, ask them to bring fruit and veggies. You’ll have to make some awesome healthy food though…or your friends and family will never come back to one of YOUR parties!

Remember, being healthy is much more important than what others think! The best advice for all situations is to focus on proper nutrition at all times. If you are eating nutrient dense foods at all meals, every day, then you will be less likely to be drawn to the junk food…free or not.

What other cultural situations present difficulties for you? What solutions have you come up with for these or other dilemmas? Comments are strongly encouraged. If you comment on facebook, I’d appreciate it if you also click through to the blog and comment there as well! Thanks for reading!

TIME MAGAZINE ARTICLE ON WEIGHT LOSS

Ray Salomone, Personal Trainer and Wellness Activist

This article caused quite a stir when it came out.

 http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1914857,00.html

It was written by John Cloud in Time Magazine and while many bloggers attacked him over the internet, I decided on another approach. I invited him to Central Park for one of my famous boot camp workouts.

To my surprise, he accepted my offer.

While one workout (even with me) won’t cause you to lose those last five pounds, it will cause you to look at exercise in a much different way. John had only been going through the motions in his workout regimen. I showed him the intensity he needed to be at. I put him through a punishing (but not out of the ordinary) workout and to his credit, he performed extremely well.

We did over 200 push ups, countless squat jumps, 6 uphill wind sprints and several other grueling drills. He never begged off and he continued to push himself.

One workout may not change his mind, but he will never look at exercise the same way again.
