High Impact Cycling Workout # 19 - Sprint Intervals: Long

In my last post, I introduced the most effective way to improve your top speed: Sprint Intervals.  Today’s workout is very similar to the Sprint Intervals (Short) workout I described last week.  The primary difference is the length of the hard effort increases from 30 seconds to one minute.  The length of the recovery period is slightly decreased as well.  This makes for an extremely tough workout because the recovery period is not long enough to facilitate total removal of the lactic acid that will build up in your legs.  Therefore, the workout will get progressively more difficult, especially when you shorten the recovery time from two minutes to one minute.  Just hang in there – this workout will really increase your fitness and performance!  Click below to download the workout.

Lanacane Anti-Chafing Gel.

There are many reasons why people chafe.  Eczema or repetitive exercise in clothes that dig into you are acceptable reasons. Being so fat that you rub yourself raw walking to the fridge is not.

But never fear! Big pharma has the answer for those whose body shape can best be described using balloon figures — Lanacane Anti-Chafing Gel. This forms a protective barrier between your rolls that is, according to their website, more effective than slathering yourself in Vaseline. Hurrah! Hopefully now that your movement is not restricted by horrible chafing, you’ll get some exercise and treat the problem rather than the symptom.

Weight loss and calories (part 2)

Okay you now know what calories are and how they work to help your body function. The next part to making your weight loss journey successful is being able to work out your daily allowances (and we mean everything – fat, protein and sugar).

Now most people will tell you to check the food label, and we recommend you do the same, but life doesn’t always make it that simple. Take going out to a restaurant – how can you truthfully know what you are eating and how many calories are in it? The real answer is, is that you can’t, but you can gain a grasp of what individual food groups contain so that you can have a fair idea.

But first to help you gain a clearer perspective, below is the daily allowance for a woman (on 2,000 calories):

Total fat – 65g

Saturated fatty acids – 20g

Cholesterol – 300mg

Sodium – 2400mg

Potassium – 4700mg

Total Carbohydrates – 300g

Fibre – 25g

Protein 50g

As you can see, what you need every day goes beyond the basics of fat, protein and fibre, but also branches into fatty acids, sodium and potassium too.

Now as we said before, most labels will now give you the basics of its ingredient base and nutrients, but in a restaurant you simply cannot know. So what do you do? The best technique we can recommend is gaining an insight into the ingredients themselves and what they contain.

Essentially you can pre-learn the calorie content of certain foods, so that you can still go out and monitor your diet. You don’t have to remember the ins and outs of all foods, but if you can learn the basics of your favourite foods, then you can still keep the excitement of going out AND losing weight.

Below are some examples to help you in your food choices:

5oz lean steak – 181 calories and 6g of fat

Medium grilled chicken breast (130g) – 192 calories and 2.9 g of fat

Lean pork chops (120g) – 221 calorie and 7.7g of fat

Medium baked potato (180g) – 245 calories and 0.4g fat

(Get more food tomorrow)

Mash potato with butter (28g) – 29 calories and 1.2g of fat

Chips (100g) – 253 calories and 9.9g of fat

Carrots (60g) – 13 calories and 0.2g of fat

Broccoli (30g) – 7 calories and 0.2 g of fat

Peas (60g) – 32 calories and 0.4g of fat

Exercises and its effects; Mental Fitness

Physical activity has been known to do everything from treat depression to improve memory, with the power to cure a host of problems while preventing even more. In particular, exercise leads to the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that alleviate pain, both physical and mental. Additionally, it is one of the few ways scientists have found to generate new neurons. Most of the research has been focused on running, but all types of aerobic exercise provide benefits.  Exercise exerts its effects on the brain through several mechanisms, including neurogenesis, mood enhancement, and endorphin release.   It has been shown that physically active people recover from mild depression more quickly, and physical activity is strongly correlated with good mental health as people age. Depression is related to low levels of certain neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine (reference). Exercise increases concentrations of these neurotransmitters by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system.

Another factor to consider is endorphins, the chemicals released by the pituitary gland in response to stress or pain. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins within approximately 30 minutes from the start of activity. These endorphins tend to minimize the discomfort of exercise and are even associated with a feeling of euphoria.  The release of endorphins has an addictive effect, and more exercise is needed to achieve the same level of euphoria over time. In fact, endorphins attach to the same neuron receptors as opiates such as morphine and heroin. Yet, exercise is not nearly as addictive as these opiates; it’s not even as addictive as milder substances such as nicotine. It seems strange that an activity as beneficial as exercise, with a built-in mechanism for addiction, is so easy to give up.  According to some polls, only about 15% of Americans say they exercise regularly.

The key to this seeming contradiction may lie in the delayed gratification experienced during exercise. Exercise differs from other addictions in that there is an initial amount of pain to endure before the euphoric payoff. The approximate 30-minute delay in the release of endorphins requires a certain level of fortitude that has not been cultivated by the American culture of video games, 30-second commercials, and various timesaving devices. In addition, exercising is made up of several tasks like putting on correct clothing, deciding on a form of exercise, maintaining adequate hydration, etc. Though each task may be mundane enough to form a habit, putting all the tasks together requires too much attention for exercise to be experienced entirely as a habit, which associates the reward or pleasure of completing a particular task with the first step of that task.

While exercise is attractive in theory, it can often be rather painful in actuality, and the discomfort of exercise is more immediately felt than its benefits. The delayed release of endorphins creates a lapse between the pain and the pleasure elements of physical activity. This is where KAOS training program comes in.  Tim and Dr. Della Bruna  have been working closely on finding ways to make the benefits of exercise more apparent while the exercise is actually occurring, thus satisfying the need for instant gratification and tipping the scales in favor of exercise.  So stand by for me…KAOS is going to change the way people excercise.

Acai Super Clear - Review

Now is the era of the Acai Berry. While it has only been a few years since the Acai Berry has made its way into North America, there are many products that have been developed that have made their way onto stores shelves and sites on the Internet. The Acai berry is now very popular because of a single simple fact: It is good for you, REALLY good for you.

The one drawback for some has been that until just recently, the berry was only available in different types of juices that were available for sale. The flavor of the berry in the juice can be quite potent and consequently drove some customers away. Also, the manufacturing process for making the juice and bottling it is oddly expensive and the cost for a few servings of Acai juice could cost more than $30. Now, the super antioxidant is available in capsule form and Acai Super Clear is one that is gaining some steam online.

Acai Super Clear-The Good

For many people, taking a capsule or two in the morning is a far preferred method of delivery than drinking a strong juice like Acai Berry juice. Acai Super Clear comes in tiny gelatin capsules and requires a dosage of two capsules per day to get 1200mg of Acai Berry Extract. This makes Acai Super Clear a very easy solution to get a massive amount of this powerful antioxidant into your system on a daily basis. The other thing that really impressed me about the product was the ingredients; the product only lists one main ingredient which is Acai Berry Extract. All too often, products such as these contain trace amounts of the ingredient they tout, but Acai Super Clear seems to stick true to the name.

Acai Super Clear-The Bad

As is often the case with many health related supplements, Acai Super Clear lists quite a few claims about the product including that it is a “mood booster” and “Hollywood’s Hottest Diet.” For a product that contains ingredients that have shown to combat actual CANCER cells, including information about it boosting your mood or that it is part of a Hollywood fad is a real turn off for me. I am not sure if this is the company trying too hard or they don’t think fighting cancer is a big enough marketing slant, either way, the over the top product promises are not needed.

Acai Super Cleanse-Conclusion

Many agree that the Acai Berry may be the super food or our lifetime and scientific studies back this up. To decide for you self if the benefits of this product are true, you should take advantage of the risk free trial offered. Either way, the Acai Berry is a wonderful antioxidant and should be included in your diet one way or another.

The wonderful and confusing world of supplements

I will get back to the KAOS workouts tomorrow and will have some video for you all, because I know it is impossible to decipher most exercises…but today I’m all about the supplements.  I went into a supplement store today and was ambushed by all the new and exciting packaging!  I mean wouldn’t I buy the mega ripped fat burning pills???  The package says I will be ripped in 10 days.  The truth of the matter is that supplements are just that, supplementing what you are not getting in your nutritional program. I have taken it all (no juice here though, if you want advise on that you are reading the wrong blog) creatine, glutamine, ripped fuel… so what do you buy?

I left the store with my usual protein powder, no-explode and amino acids. As far as multivitamins are concerned, I try to get all my vitamins from real foods such as spinach, broccoli, apples, asparagus and the list goes on and on. I have read too many studies saying that you can not put the same vitamins in a pill, and that makes sense to me. I don’t always have time to plan out my snacks so to keep my daily nutrition regular the shakes are good in a pinch. I love my no-explode or what I call go-juice, even when I don’t feel like working out - it kicks me up, coffee works too, but if you have any workout upper make sure you drink at least 16 ounces of water before your workout or you are going to crash and burn. If you don’t need the workout upper don’t start, it tends to get a bit addictive.   Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, which helps you build those lean muscles. The fact is that real foods and real vitamins and real protein are better than anything that starts with a syntha or beta. Simple is better.  A little hint - your local farmer’s market is a better supplement store than GNC.

Add a little Kaos™ to your workouts

Back and Bicep day, chest and tricep day, shoulder day, leg day, cardio day, day off, it sounds boring doesn’t it. We are going to add some Kaos™ to your workouts!

Kaos™ is an ever evolving program that I have developed.  The program is based on Chaos Theory - in a scientific context, the word chaos has a slightly different meaning than it does in its general usage as a state of confusion, lacking any order. Chaos, with reference to chaos theory, refers to an apparent lack of order in a system that nevertheless obeys particular laws or rules; this understanding of chaos is synonymous with dynamical instability, a condition discovered by the physicist Henri Poincare in the early 20th century that refers to an inherent lack of predictability in some physical systems.   The two main components of chaos theory are the ideas that systems - no matter how complex they may be - rely upon an underlying order, and that very simple or small systems and events can cause very complex behaviors or events. This latter idea is known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions , a circumstance discovered by Edward Lorenz (who is generally credited as the first experimenter in the area of chaos) in the early 1960s.  Kaos™ training program uses the principals of the Chaos Theory -  there’s no rhyme or reason to the exercises involved, no order, but yet it is a structured program that delivers results by keeping your muscles in constant shock.

Over the next few weeks I am going to expand on it and throw in a couple videos to give you an idea of how it works.  I am going to start off simple and leave you with a little home work for this week.   So, what you are going to do on each workout day with weights is add in one of those heart pounding exercises in between the usual chest press and tricep push down.  I am going to give you a list of the exercises that you already probably know, but I will also give you a tasty sample work out at the end of this post.

Here is a list for the beginners out there:

1. No weight squats-20 reps

2. Lunges, straight up and down-20 reps

3. Low box single leg step up-20 reps on each leg

4. Leg press-20 reps low weight

5. Hopping squats-20 reps

Make sure on all of these that you’re form is correct, if your knee’s are going over you’re toes, that is not right - they should always be behind the toes. Keep you’re chin up and eyes should not be on the ground because chances are you’re back is not straight and that is wrong, you don’t want to wake up with a stiff  back.

These ones are for the more advanced players:

1. Dumbbell clean and press

2. Straight legged dead lifts (Romanian dead lifts)

3. Walking lunges with dumbbells

4. Bench side to side hoppers

5. Bench hopper squats

6. Dumbbell dead lifts

7. Squats with weight

8. Jump rope

These are just a few of the Kaos™exercises you can add in, I have a lot more but they are a little harder to explain video will probably be more effective.  This is just a sample workout for the advanced, you can mix and match any exercises from the list above. Remember this is just the beginning as i said before this is an ever evolving training program:

Each exercise will have 3 sets

Circuit 1: with as little rest in between sets as possible

dumbbell chest presses into dumbbell clean and presses into bench dips into 30 second jump rope

Circuit 2: 2 minute rest in between circuit 1 and 2

Incline dumbbell chest presses into incline easy curl bar tricep extensions (scull crushers) into hopper squats into plyo-push ups

Circuit 3: treadmill intervals (On a treadmill start off with a light jog for 1 minute then increase the speed to full excursion depending on you’re fitness level for 20 seconds then go back to light jog for 1 minute, repeat 5 times)

I will be back with many more.

Break out of the normal routine, make it more interesting and the results will make you extremely happy. From weights to cardio and the combination of the two, I am going to show you how.

Oprah's warning for Kirstie Alley

Should we be suprised to see that  fattie-turned Jenny Craig spokeswoman-no longer, Kirstie Alley has fallen off the bandwagon?  (Kind of makes you think she should have stuck with them.)

Afterall, isn’t yo-yo dieting an epidemic?  I mean most people that have battled the bulge have lost weight only to gain it back and more.  We have seen Oprah herself–the queen of daytime succumb to this tragedy.

Will it happen to Valerie Bertinelli too?

Kirstie was interviewed today by Oprah (we have now seen her three times about her weight on that show) and explained why she could not keep the weight off.   She confessed that she did not have the discipline and hadn’t done the work in changing her state of mind.  She had much praise for the folks at Jenny Craig but said her decision to part ways from therm had to do with creative differences.   She is launching her own weight loss food program and said that “By November I have to look ripped.”  After that comment Oprah warned her not to set herself up for public failure again and encouraged her to look the best she can in the time she needs.

Although Kirstie was talking a good game, subconsciously she seemed unconvinced herself.

Oprah didn’t seem convinced either.
